Bich Dong Grotto is located in Ngu Hanh Son Mountains in Dam hamlet. A short sampan trip takes you into beautiful landscapes with channels meandering between high rocks and grottoes. Charmed by the marvelous scenery, the Tu Duc King gave Bich Dong the titles of "the second most beautiful grotto in Vietnam".
Boat cruise in Hoa Binh Province
When you are in Hoa Binh Province, do not miss a boat trip up and down the giant reservoir built on the Da River for the Hoa Binh hydropower plant, as the cruise will offer you hours of peace to view the range of magnificent mountains and hills and the chance to taste specialties of the river.
A cruise on the reservoir takes about three hours and rent for a boat with a driver ranges from VND 150,000 to VND 400,000 depending on boat types and your ability to haggle with the owner. It is advised that you should hire a big boat for your safety and for more space for you to lie down to relax or sleep during the trip.
Usually, the boat trip starts at a wharf near the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant in Thai Thinh Commune after a short tour of the eight-turbine plant, which was built under a mountain in the town of Hoa Binh and commissioned in 1994, and to a mountain where a huge statue of Uncle Ho stands and where you can have a panoramic view of Hoa Binh.
It’s up to you to choose the departure time but the best time is when the sun rises high in the sky so that you can have a clear view of attractions around the 100-square kilometre reservoir on the Da River.
Make sure you book the boat trip on a day with good weather as mist often covers the reservoir during the morning, making it difficult for you to take beautiful pictures of the fascinating scenes of the lake.
On a clear day, what you can see around the wharf is the scene of women using their feet to row small boats to and from their houses around the reservoir. Around an hour and a half upstream stand imposing mountains with limestones that can take the form of figures depending to your imagination. Here and there are ethnic people farming on hills. The hills and mountains that dot the Hoa Binh Reservoir might remind you of the UNESCO-recognised Halong Bay in the northern province of Quang Ninh, where tourist and fishing boats regularly traverse the turquoise water.
At Hoa Binh, you will experience calm and quiet the further your boat travels upstream as a quite few boats are in your line of vision. What you can hear is the sound of the boat’s engine, birds singing far away and winds whistle through trees.
If you want to have lunch on an island located somewhere in the tranquil reservoir, call Bui Kieu Hung on (018) 891 537. Hung is a Muong man who is always ready to prepare a lunch of the well-known baked fish of the Da River and specialties of Hoa Binh Province.
Hung and his relatives are willing to serve you free wines with beehives and insects as well as drink with you during the lunch. They also tell you about the Muong culture and stage songs and dances of their people. Not far from the island where Hung lives is the temple commemorating Ba Chua Thac Bo, who is said to protect farmers and help them conquer the violent current of the Da River and make it a source of water for their farming.
As the boat runs the same route on the way back, you can sleep inside or on the deck of the boat to recover your strength before you discover other attractions of the northern province, about 73 kilometres southwest of Hanoi.
Boat trip on Perfume river in Hue
A boat trip on the Perfume River is one of the highlights of a visit to Hué and includes stops to visit some of the city’s main attractions. Passing other sampans (traditional rowing boats) on their way to market, houseboats and dragon boats, a typical trip will take visitors to the Thien Mu Pagoda, Hon Chen Temple and the Royal Tombs. Its most striking feature is the seven-tiered tower, representing the seven steps to enlightenment. Another way to experience the Perfume River is on an evening boat trip hosting a traditional folksong performance, a tradition that goes back to the rule of the emperors when artists would play music and recite poetry from a rowing boat on the river.
