Nha Trang Tarvel Tips, Nha Trang Warnings or Dangers
Nha Trang Bay Tourist - Travel agency to avoid
Do never deal with this agency. Commissions are very high and will be charged even if the service does not correspond to your needs. The personnel are not honest. They just want to make money on you. They will put you in a bad position where you have no choice to pay it. My air ticket was booked and confirmed and when I came to pick up, the air ticket became a train ticket which cost the same. I had no choice to take it because they will not reimburse my deposit (50% of deposit is required to print the ticket) and the hotels were fully booked. It’s better to deal with your hotel travel agent or Saigontourist located at the Yasaka hotel.
Hot sun!
Being by the sea Nha Trang feels relatively cool compared to other towns and cities in Vietnam. Make sure you put on lots of sunblock! I got burnt on the first day and had to spend a few days laying by the pool covered in a sarong!
Mineral water scam
My friend bought a bottle of mineral water from a street vendor near Blue Star hotel but the owner used a plastic bag and did a swop of another cheaper mineral water brand. My friend only realised it when she was back in the hotel room. Lesson learnt: please check what you have bought before you leave.
Nha Trang-Purse Snatching via Motorcycle Thieves
WARNING! Be very careful of the bags you are carrying. In fact: DO NOT CARRY BAGS such as shoulder bags, small backpacks, camera cases, cameras. I was a victim of a purse snatching by 2 thugs on a motorcycle who caught me unawares for a second. They pulled up alongside and grabbed my bag from my shoulder - which came right off because it had clips that connect the bag to the strap. Thankfully there was only a little cash in the bag and nothing else important. The theft took place just outside of the Dam Market area in broad daylight with lots of people on the streets - on 2 Thang 4 street. I'm sure we were being watched and they waited for the right opportunity. We reported this to the police right away and they were extremely helpful and were confident they would catch the thieves as someone in the area had written down the license plate. Well, that's what they said...Who knows?? Lesson is: 1) don't carry bags, stuff it all in your zippered pockets 2) don't carry cash, credit cards, passport & other important stuff all in one place or all on one person, distribute it. 3) leave your passport and room key with the hotel 4) put some cash in your pocket - whatever you want to spend for the day & keep the rest at the hotel.
Taxi Scam at Nha Trang Train Station
Driver will take your bag automatically and put it into his taxi - then say he'll take you to your hotel for far more than it really costs. For 4 people we were charged $5 US which we bargained down from $6. Stupid of us, but it was raining and late. We should have told him to turn on the meter - the charge would have been only 17,000 dong - about $1 US. Just tell the driver to turn the meter on and go to a hotel that you have previously selected. Better yet is to bypass the taxi queue in front of the station and catch one out on the street.
Hot Sands & Bikinis
Sand particles in Nha Trang beach are quite big & they can be quite hot especially around 11:30-2pm. Remember to bring along water sport foot wear (like Nike ACG), because those hot sands almost caused injury to my foot. One more thing, those skimpy bikinis can be quite hot too. Bring a good pair of eyewear to protect from eye injury & prevent being caught by your female pal for watching one*. Note*: Normally come in pair(s). Haha!!!
Mosquitos
I got very badly bitten by mosquitos in Nha Trang at the Sailing club. I was covered from head to foot in Neet Deet and still they made a meal out of me biting me about 20 times. Theres a very low risk of malaria there but still it made the rest of my stay in Vietnam quite uncomfortable.
Beach antics
Be careful on the beach at night. Not that you are in much physical danger but as one party going Norweigan found out, if you pass out drunk on the beach, you are likely to wake up sans cash and wallet! Just exercise common sense.
Books for sale
Everywhere in VN, people may disturb your lunch or supper trying to sell souvenirs, lottery tickets or plain and simple beg. The Nha Trang variant is selling books. The locals will go buy a range of books at the local bookstore (I assume), then selling them through to the tourists. In case you like reading, this will be a wonderful way to buy books. Otherwise, the local perseverance (which seems even harder than elsewhere) may soon become annoying. But don't panic: there will be a variation, cos you'll also be able to buy candy, cigarettes and so on. Please try to stay polite however, these people are just trying to make a living
