Flying makes sense
Flying between places makes sense in Vietnam, for several reasons... and not only because you are short of time. The distances are quite important between most places of interest, with a significant exception in central Vietnam (Hoi An - Danang - Hue) - roads are in good conditions but no one follows road rules.. or maybe there simply aren't... an accident is always around the corner. For longer distances we chose to fly, so we got to Nha Trang by plane from Danang... a dodgy-looking ATR72 which had seen better days, but I slept all the way through... a very smooth 1 hour and 20 minutes flight. The cost? Less than 50 dollars by Vietnam airlines, which except for this flight had large and very modern planes. Recommended.

On the back of a bike-Moto's
If you can find the a good moto driver. Half an hours ride around the city should cost you 20,000 donmg. Unlike in Hoi An.

Overnight train to Danang
We took the overnight train from Nha Trang to Danang just for the experience. Now that we've done it once we won't need to do it again........... Filthy dirty on board facilities, I itched all night[ not sure if that was just in my mind] but by far the worst thing was the sleeping arrangements. It was a four bedded cabin with just my husband and I to start with. When we pulled out of the station the procession started. Every 3 to 4 hours a train worker would come bumbling into the cabin, throw himself up on the top spare bunk, turn lights on or off, turn the fan on or off, snort, spit and cough, then his alarm on his watch would go off, up he'd get, leave the cabin only to be replaced by another worker. This went on the whole trip.So much for a sleeper cabin. We didn't sleep all night. Thank goodness for the cans of coke we bought with us from the station. Oh did I mention the RUM that went with the coke helped too!!!!!
Airport in Cam Ranh
The Nha Trang airport that was right in the centre of the town was closed in May 2004. Flights now go to the new Cam Ranh airport, located 35 km south of Nha Trang. The Cam Ranh airport is intended to become an international airport . It is linked to Nha Trang by the National Highway #1 (40 Km) or the new Pacific Coast highway (30 Km). Flights landing to the Cam Ranh/Nha Trang airport are operated by Vietnam Airlines with ATR72 or Airbus A320. A flight to HCMC or Danang will cost $38 USD while heading to Hanoi will set you back $65 USD. A bus service leaving from the Cam Ranh airport costs 22 000 VND to the old Nha Trang airport or 30 000 VND to Nha Trang downtown. A taxi service costs 150 000 VND for a regular taxi (4 people) or 180 000 VND for a large one (up to 7 people).
City Bus & Motor Taxi
City bus is the cheapest transportation you can find but not as flexible as motor taxi. You can easily wave a motor taxi service for any distance and also any length of their time. You can even hire them as your personal rider for the day and sending you to this attraction or that. You’re the boss!!
Cyclo to Market
The auntie is hiring the cyclo service to do marketing. I heard that every cyclo rider must have license to operate their cyclo. The reason is to eliminate reckless rider that might cause undesirable damages to passenger who is happen to be sitting in front of the cyclo. Good thinking huh!!
Bicycle
I didn’t say that bicycle is the only mode of transport to bring you to beach. But bicycle is a great way of exploring Nha Trang City. By the way, Nha Trang is the 4th biggest city in Vietnam.
bicycle rickshaw
if you need transport around nha trang, then take a bicycle rickshaw. NEVER go by notorbike taxi. they are well known for robbing tourists in nha trang. especially at night. the bicycle rickshaws on the other hand, have a reputation for being very honest.
Motorcycle
Get your own wheels
It's pretty easy to hire a motorbike in a touristic city like Nha Trang. One option is to go to the Sinh Cafe (or competitor). That's what I did in July 2002. I wonder if the guy is already out of the shock he got into when I said I'd be hiring it for 14 days. *laughs* So, I was taken to another place where bikes & motorbikes are for hire (Tuan Mai, 2L Hung Vuong, street parallel to Tran Phu Street). Of course, when you're not as crazy as me, the touristic offices are the better option. I just paid the regular day price (5$) * 14d (with the Sinh Cafe paying a smaller amount to Tuan Mai). If you speak Vietnamese fluently, it might be a better idea to directly visit Tuan Mai (only the little daughter spoke a little bit of English... but don't worry: the Vietnamese will always know a friend who knows a friend who speaks English *smiles*) Attention. Nha Trang is the only city where I almost had a motorbike accident. This occurred when a local motorbiker saw me, and didn't expect I'd be driving Vietnamese style & thus stopped. In other words, the Vietnamese may adapt their typical driving style when noticing a whitie on a motorbike. This makes them less predictable
